The Day of the Lord

It will be like a man who flees from a lion, only to encounter a bear, or who enters his house and rests his hand against the wall, only to be bitten by a snake. —Amos 5:19

We read about the day of the Lord throughout the Bible. But when does this great and terrible day happen? The day of the Lord happens in Revelation 6:

For the great day of Their wrath has come, and who is able to withstand it?” (Revelation 6:17)

The 6th seal begins the day of the Lord. On this day, Jesus Christ will appear during a very dark time for believers. It will be during the world reign of the antichrist, which will be a time of great Christian persecution, like a holocaust. After Jesus appears, he sends out his angels to gather us from the four winds (Revelation 7), those of us who are alive who are left, and then God’s wrath begins on an evil and dying world (Revelation 8).

In the Bible, the day of the Lord is referred to in different ways:

The Day of the Lord:

The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before the coming of the great and awesome Day of the LORD. (Joel 2:31)

The Day of Christ:

so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, (Philippians 1:10)

The Day of Christ Jesus:

being confident of this, that He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus. (Philippians 1:6)

That Day:

when he comes on that day to be glorified in his saints, and to be marveled at among all who have believed, because our testimony to you was believed. (2 Thessalonians 1:10)

The Day of Our Lord Jesus:

as you have already understood us in part, so that you may boast of us just as we will boast of you in the day of our Lord Jesus. (2 Corinthians 1:14)

The Day of Our Lord Jesus Christ:

He will sustain you to the end, so that you will be blameless on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. (1 Corinthians 1:8)

The Day of God:

as you anticipate and hasten the coming of the day of God, when the heavens will be destroyed by fire and the elements will melt in the heat. (2 Peter 3:12)

In Proverbs, the day of the Lord is referred to as the day of disaster. Some believe these days might be different events. For example, they might believe the day of the Lord is when God focuses on Israel and the day of Christ is the sheep and goat judgment. In order for this to be true, we have to prove it with Scripture, but we can’t, so it’s not true. Let’s compare the last scripture we just read from 2 Peter 3:12 to 2 Peter 3:10. In verse 12, the apostle Peter uses the phrase day of God. In verse 10, Peter uses the phrase day of the Lord:

But the Day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar, the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and its works will be laid bare. (2 Peter 3:10)

The events that happen in 2 Peter 3:10 are the same events that happens in 2 Peter 3:12. The day of the Lord and the day of God are used synonymously because things are destroyed by fire in both scriptures. Also, the apostle Peter tells us that the day of the Lord will come like a thief. Now let’s listen to the apostle Paul:

But you, brothers, are not in the darkness so that this day should overtake you like a thief. (1 Thessalonians 5:4)

The beginning of 1 Thessalonians 5 is a continuation of the end of chapter 4, which talks about how we’ll be caught up to meet the Lord in the air, which is the rapture. Why would Paul say the day of the Lord shouldn’t overtake us like a thief unless we might be here for this day? We know that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night to an evil world, but for those of us who will survive this persecution, we’ll know that Jesus is right at the door. We hasten the coming of the day of God because that’s when we’re gathered to Jesus at his coming, those of us who are alive, who remain, who survive the persecution under the antichrist. Here’s what happens after the rapture:

16 ‘Never again will they hunger, and never will they thirst; nor will the sun beat down upon them, nor any scorching heat.’ 17 For the Lamb in the center of the throne will be their shepherd. ‘He will lead them to springs of living water,’ and ‘God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.’” (Revelation 7:16-17)

In that day they will say, “Surely this is our God; we trusted in him, and he saved us. This is the LORD, we trusted in him; let us rejoice and be glad in his salvation.” (Isaiah 25:9)

Thus, we’ll always be with the Lord. In these last days, let’s make sure we’re kept from the hour of trial that’s coming on the whole world by keeping the Lord’s word of patient endurance. Let’s obey God’s commandments and receive his promise of eternal life through Jesus Christ. Here’s God with the final word:

Yes, it is coming, and it will surely happen, declares the Lord GOD. This is the day of which I have spoken. (Ezekiel 39:8)
